Poplin is the fabric that does the most without making a show of it. Tight weave, smooth hand, just enough sheen to look considered without looking like you tried. It sits flat under a jacket, breathes in summer heat, and irons out so cleanly you barely have to think about it. We’ve always rated a good poplin shirt as the workhorse of a well organized wardrobe, but that’s not the whole story. The right cut matters enormously. Too boxy and the fabric reads cheap. Too slim and the collar buckles by noon. What we’ve been looking for here are shirts where the construction matches the cloth, where the collar has enough stiffness to hold its shape without a tie, and where the overall fit works as well tucked into tailored trousers as it does worn open over the weekend. These are not shirts you rotate reluctantly. They’re the ones you reach for first.
