Black works harder than any other color in a wardrobe and the overshirt might be where it earns its keep most quietly. Worn open over a white tee it looks intentional without looking considered. Buttoned up with trousers it sits somewhere between a casual shirt and a light jacket, which is exactly where a lot of real dressing actually happens. The problem with most overshirts is that they get the weight wrong. Too light and they look like a shirt that lost its nerve. Too stiff and they never drape properly off the shoulder. We’ve been looking specifically at options that hit the right weight, hold their structure through a full day, and don’t turn shapeless after six months of regular wear. Fabric matters here. So does the collar. A good black overshirt should work as hard worn over a midlayer in October as it does thrown over a tee in early spring. These are the ones that actually do that.
